Background to The 49ers Band

The 49ers were formed in February 09 by chance. An introduction by a friend, and a following chance meeting of the two, found that they had similar tastes in music, and both were keen to re-establish their previous musical experiences. Both Rene & Phil have enjoyed time with previous bands and this seemed like a good way to have a bit of fun, enjoy playing music again and fill a bit of spare time.

It wasn’t long before they were receiving requests to play at local venues. For some reason people seemed to like their varied musical choice. It was at this point that they thought they should give themselves a name.

The 49ers was mentioned and seemed an obvious choice as they were both born in April 49, (quite old then, but only in age!) so the name stuck.

Primarily a covers band, their music varies from 60s to present day, some soft some heavy, so they cover most tastes.

Why only two you may ask?

The reasons are that they find the whole thing easier to manage, rehearse and more importantly play venues that are small and not so small, tailoring the sound and volume levels to meet the needs of the gig. Without a complete set of drums and bass you may think that the sound would be light and lacking in punch, but they actually produce a sound that is rich and full of depth.

Their sound is produced by personally playing and recording both drums and bass. This forms the rhythm section of the band, Rene handles the vocals and rhythm guitar while Phil takes care of lead guitar.

So far (and it’s very early days), they have been very well received and they can look forward to growing in popularity as both their music list and venues grow.
