Introducing... Taylor and Marie
'Tilt The Moon', the debut EP from two young but critically acclaimed artists Jodie Marie and Samuel Taylor, reflects a friendship and musical partnership of two blues, vinyl-obsessed musicians.
It's also the nocturnal fruit of Marie and Taylor's bucolic recording experience at Wales' StudiOwz. A working farm that dictated the late night and early morning recording sessions, “it was a great experience and the perfect place to make such a roots-based record,” says Taylor. “We had to stop recording every afternoon at 4pm when the milking began – things got a little noisy in the cowshed.”
The EP's groundwork took the form of some genuine late night bonding, listening to “loads of old records, showing each other tracks we loved; Dylan's 'One Too Many Mornings', Baez's 'Silver Dagger', Richard Thompson's 'Beeswing', and on an on,” explains Taylor. “Jodie has a great knowledge of music and showed me so many soulful, blues and country records.”
Duos like Johnny Cash and June Carter and Baez and Dylan are huge inspirations for Marie, 'discovered' by the industry and writing songs with Ed Harcourt and Bernard Butler at just 16 years old. “It was about getting together to play music because they loved sharing the stage with another artist, and it worked really well” says Marie. “We aren't trying to be contrived or 'retro' – the music that speaks to us is classic and heartfelt, and that's what we are trying to be too.”
It was following Marie's critically acclaimed debut 'Mountain Echo' - an emotional record that recalls the blues and jazz-folk-edge of 60s singer-songwriters like Carole King – that she met up with Taylor, who'd played on the same circuit. Following his seven-year stint with Sheffield band, Dead Like Harry, his debut solo EP 'Some Nobody Like Me' was a clear demonstration of Taylor's craft - thoughtful and melodic - and received national radio support from Steve Lamacq and Graham Norton.
The four beautiful songs of 'Tilt The Moon' reflect the vintage lineage of both artists (with the classic honesty of 'All I Need') and the inevitable theme that can only arise from the synching of two artists' passions – and body clocks. Their cover of 'Bad Moon Rising' and the EP's mournful, ode-to-love conclusion, 'Tilt The Moon', reveals a distinctive lunar theme. “It's the light that brightens up the night sky, it controls the tides,” says Marie. “Seems to make a lot of sense considering most of the songs arrived with us during all those night sessions.”
Following a headline tour this month, Taylor and Marie will be joining friend Nerina Pallot on her UK tour later this year. "Jodie and I actually first met on the Nerina Pallot 'Year of the Wolf' Tour in 2011”, says Taylor. Samuel was the opening support act and Nerina's roadie, Jodie was the main support act on her first ever tour. “It will be almost exactly three years from when we set out on that first tour, we can't wait to be back on stage again, but this time performing together."
