André de Ridder conductor Baiba Skride violin Lauma Skride piano Wagner: Siegfried Idyll J S Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No.3 Mendelssohn: Concerto for Violin and Piano Mozart: Symphony No.39 Mendelssohn’s youthful Concerto for Violin and Piano, written when he was just 14, is the perfect showcase for Latvian sisters, Baiba and Lauma Skride. Still in their twenties, they’ve fast been making names for themselves as both soloists and as a duo of uncanny chemistry. Before that, sinfonia ViVA shows off its own soloists in Bach’s 3rd Brandenburg Concerto. A perennial favourite, this Italian-tinged masterpiece was, for many years, the signature tune to the BBC’s Antique’s Roadshow. Wagner composed his Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his wife after the birth of their son and this sweetly lulling work shows a gentle side not often associated with Wagner. Mozart composed his 39th Symphony in a burst of activity that saw him complete his last three symphonies in a single summer. Now one of his most admired pieces it’s a masterful blend of hushed intensity and high spirits.
