Phill Jupitus at The Glee ClubDate: Sun 16th Oct Time: 19:00 Phill Jupitus returns to stand-up at The Glee Club Nottingham The legendary Phill Jupitus returns to his stand-up roots with a rare live tour this Autumn, including a date at Nottingham’s Glee Club on Sunday 16 October. Surprising, like Oates climbing back into Scott’s tent, Jupitus returns to what he does best. Erudite, troubled, occasionally mean, if you’ve only ever seen him on TV, expect to spill your drink in fury/joy. From inauspicious beginnings as an unemployed alternative poet, Phill has become a national treasure of British pop culture. He began his performing career in 1984 when he quit working in a Job Centre to become a ranting poet, quickly rising to prominence supporting such bands as The Style Council and The Housemartins. By day Phil worked for indie record label Go! Disc as press officer for The Housemartins and directing videos for Billy Bragg and the late Kirsty McColl. By night his poetry and compering became so successful he toured with such luminaries as Madness, The Who and Paul Weller. 1995 saw the beginning of Phill’s radio career, hosting his own show at BBC Greater London Radio. In 2000 Phill had the honour of playing the first ever record on the BBC’s new dedicated music station 6 Music as its inaugural Breakfast DJ. Phill’s highly successful television career began in 1996 when he became team captain on BBC2′s pop quiz Never Mind the Buzzcocks. Now in its twenty-third series, Phill is the only remaining member of the original line-up. He also makes regular appearances on several other panel shows, notably QI. Phill’s stand-up has taken him on two UK tours; Jedi, Steady, Go (1996), where he performed a personal interpretation of the Star Wars story, and the hugely popular Quadrophobia (1999). For the last three years he’s hosted The Times football podcast The Game, as well as writing for the prestigious supplement of the same name, and also presents his own cult music podcast, Perfect Ten. Despite these current media commitments, Phill finds the time to go back out on the road touring the UK as a key member of the successful improv-show Totally Looped and also as lead singer with The Blockheads. In the Autumn of 2009 Phill graced the West End stage in the hit musical Hairspray and the summer of 2010 saw the release of his book Good Morning Nantwich - Adventures In Breakfast Radio.
