Halle at Theatre Royal & Royal Concert HallDate: Sat 25th Oct Time: 18:30 Markus Stenz conductor Paul Barritt violin Nicholas Trygstad cello Jonathan Scott piano Weber Overture: Der Freischutz Beethoven: Triple Concerto Stravinsky: The Rite of Spring Stravinsky’s ballet, The Rite of Spring, caused a riot when it was first performed in 1913. Nearly a century after its shattering premiere there’s still nothing like it. Stravinsky was inspired by ‘the violent Russian spring that seemed to begin in an hour and was like the whole earth cracking’ and this primal force drives a scorching sequence of pagan rituals, tribal contests and, finally, a hair-raising sacrificial dance. No less revolutionary in its own time, Weber’s Der Freischutz was the first German Romantic opera and drew heavily on local legends and folk tunes. In his atmospheric overture Weber brilliantly captures the strange beauty of the forest. Completing our musical revolutionaries is Beethoven whose elegant Triple Concerto gives the Hallé’s soloists a chance to shine.
