They’re all brilliantly evoked in these colourful dances, close musical cousins to Holst’s The Planets. George Meredith’s poem, The Lark Ascending, inspired Vaughan Williams’ timeless depiction of the bird’s flight and song, soaring above a tranquil landscape. On a grander scale altogether, Vaughan Williams’ A Sea Symphony takes us on an unforgettable journey, cresting the waves of vast oceans. Vernon Handley, a legendary conductor of Vaughan Williams, leads a stellar team that unites Opera North favourite, Janice Watson, with baritone, Roderick Williams, backed by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Nottingham Harmonic Society.
